Whilst HID lights still have their place, we're big advocates of LED grow lights.
We recognise the wealth of information (!!) around LED lights, so we're going to try break it down over a series of posts.
The first one is relatively known, but still needs to be said! If it smells like BS, it usually is! 💩
The most accurate way when referring and comparing light wattage, is to use the actual power draw from the wall. 🔌
Two ways that companies quote misleading wattages:
1. 𝗤𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆.
Diodes aren't generally run at full tilt (run anything at max and it will run hot and won't last very long - one reason why you should spec a higher extract fan for your room, but that's another topic!).
So what some charlatans do, is quote the Diode Capacity x No. Of Diodes. Bullshit right? 💩
2. 𝗤𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 "𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼" 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.
This term is so loosely used its criminal; it could mean anything! e.g my car is "equivalent" to a Porche...because the wheels are the same colour. Major bullshit. 💩
Fortunately, these types of companies confine themselves to ebay and amazon for easy prey! Though, a few sharks can sneak out into open waters so always read the small print.🦈
In summary, always ensure you check the power draw from the wall...
...but be aware that higher wattage does not mean a "better" light. We'll cover that in part 2! 👀😄
